Dave Meslin
Author, Activist, and Creative Director @Unlock Democracy

David Meslin is community organizer and activist and author of Teardown: Rebuilding Democracy from the Ground Up.

He is the Creative Director of Unlock Democracy Canada and founder of many impactful initiatives including Toronto Public Space Committee and Cycle Toronto, and organized City Idol.

He was involved in founding 'Spacing' magazine, and has written a number of its articles. He also founded the Ranked Ballot Initiative of Toronto. His 2010 TED Talk, The Antidote to Apathy has over 2 million views, and his book, Unlock Democracy is currently being turned into a TVO docuseries, coming out in 2024.  His thesis is simple: We're stronger and smarter when we're all involved.

Parks are Where We Rebuild Democracy

Dave Meslin and Zahra Ebrahim explore the opportunities for public spaces to be sites of equitable community building and community organizing. The two will discuss what parks have to do with democracy and the multiple benefits of parks shaped by their communities.
